Many congratulations to undergraduate students Ethan Wan and Angela Cleere, who are both graduating in Spring 2024. Both Ethan and Angela have contributed enormously to ongoing and published lab projects in the past few years, resulting in several publications, poster awards, summer training programs, and elite research scholarships. Ethan will now being his MD training at UAB, and Angela will be moving to the Medical College of Wisconsin to enter a PhD program in Pharmacology. Both will be missed!

Congratulations to lab undergraduate trainee Angela Cleere on receiving first place poster presentation honors at the 2024 John W.P. Ost Undergraduate Research Competitiion in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences! Angela’s presentation focused on the molecular mechanisms by which opioids alter gene expression programs in non-neuronal cells in the brain, including astrocytes.

Lab MD/PhD student Kasey Brida is awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual Predoctoral NRSA (F30) from NIDA! The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA F30 program is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students in combined MD/PhD training programs, and who intend careers as physician-scientists. This award will support Kasey's stipend and provide an institutional allowance for career development activities. Congratulations Kasey!

This issue focused on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms in substance use and substance use disorders. Former winners of the NIDA Avenir Award program were invited to submit original research or review articles on their Avenir topic. The Goldwater Scholarship is a federally supported scholarship program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater, and is intended to support outstanding students in pursuit of research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent under-graduate award of its type in these fields. Congrats Ethan!

Dr. Day takes the reins as Director of the UAB Comprehensive Neuroscience Center (CNC). The CNC is a network of more than 450 UAB Neuroscience research faculty, clinicians, staff, students, and trainees, with membership from 32 UAB departments and 9 UAB schools. The CNC serves as a focal point for basic and applied neuroscience research at UAB.

The Day Lab receives a 2022 Neurobiology of Brain Disorders Award from the McKnight Foundation. This award will support a collaborative project with Dr. Ian Maze (HHMI, Mt. Our paper on adaptation of CRISPR activation for neuronal systems has been accepted for publication in eNeuro. This work was headed by Katherine Savell and Svitlana Bach, but was a team effort involving a substantial fraction of the lab. This manuscript details significant alterations to available CRISPR/dCas9 tools in order to achieve robust and efficient gene regulation in neurons. This system provides a specific, modular, and multiplexable platform for titratable upregulation of selected genes both in vivo and in vitro, without the need for a specific transgenic animal. The plasmids outlined in this manuscript are available on Addgene. Congrats to everyone that assisted in completion of this manuscript!

Congratulations to Day Lab undergraduate student Rhiana Simon, who was one of 4 UAB students to win poster presentation awards at the 14th Annual University of Alabama System Honors Research Conference. UAB students won awards in 4 of the 8 categories, and Rhiana's poster was selected as the top presentation in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics category.

Congrats to Day Lab undergraduate student Rhiana Simon on her admission into the UAB Summer Program in Neuroscience (SPIN). Rhiana will join other undergraduate students from across the country for a hands-on research experience during the summer of 2015. Admission to this competitive program includes a summer stipend and one-on-one preparation for graduate studies.
